As the Georgian Bay Symphony continues its search for a new Music Director, Cuban-born Yunior Lopez will take the podium for its March 28 concert. Lopez is this year’s guest conductor for the Havana Virtuoso Orchestra and recently conducted the Las Vegas Honors Orchestra. Lopez is a conductor, chamber player, violist and ...cigar-maker. He will be donating a box of his cigars from his own cigar company in Kentucky, Don Lopez Cigars, as a silent auction item for the 16th Annual Vintners’ Dinner on April 18th.
The Georgian Bay Symphony is also pleased to welcome Russian born violinist, Stanislav Pronin back for a return engagement after a European tour.
Pronin has performed at Carnegie Hall and The National Arts Centre in Ottawa and in major venues and on television and radio in the United States, Canada, Europe and Israel.
The concert on March 28th is an evening of “Nothing But Classics”.
Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada and Member of Parliament for Saanich - Gulf Islands, was not allowed to express her opinion in the House of Commons on the announcement by the Conservatives to extend and expand the mission in Iraq. Unfortunately, Conservative Party MPs blocked Ms. May from speaking to these points, but we thought Hub readers might want to hear them.
"We've learned the dangers of shortsighted thinking from the ill-conceived military action in Libya, which made the terrorist threat across North Africa even worse. Once again, the Harper Conservatives have no clear direction, end-goal or exit strategy for the Iraq mission, which grew from a non-combat role to a combat mission on the ground, and now would include airstrikes in both Iraq and Syria.

The terrorists will have won if we voluntarily surrender the very rights and freedoms Mr Harper says they hate us for.
For that is what Bill C-51 is, a surrender.
I have read the Bill, and I've read the terrorist provisions now in the Criminal Code, and the new Canadian Security Intelligence Act that passed into law even as Parliament began debate on new police powers for the Canadian Security Intelligent Service under C-51.
In the Criminal Code there are already a dozen definitions of terrorism. In section 83.01, a terrorist activity must “serve a political, religious or ideological purpose … and with the intention of intimidating the public … or compelLINg a person, a government … to do or refrain from doing any act … and that intentionally causes death” or harm, including harm to an essential service. (s.83.01(1)b)
That this works is proven by the various hair-brained and hair-raising schemes police and CSIS have already uncovered and put before the courts.

A hint of spring is in the air, a breath of fresh air, and a touch of warmth in the sun. This is a time of renewal. I wonder, in your life, what brings you this refreshing gift?
Snow still covers much of the ground, and the dirt is frozen solid. Still, in pots of earth set in the window sill, we can start tomatoes, plant basil and thyme. The sun will warm the earth we bring inside, and green will grow, a reminder that crocuses and maple leaves are coming...
