sharif

Like many people in our community, I have a heavy heart. We are in the wake of a deeply distressing incident— a beloved member of our community, a paragon of compassion and integrity, has suffered a vicious assault. Sharif is known to many as a gentle, and community-oriented person. One cannot help but think that he may have been a victim of racial prejudices that continue to plague our society. As we confront this harsh reality I have a glimmer of hope, because there is immense power that lies within the community, power to heal, power to unite, and power to fight for justice.

In times like these, when our community experiences acts of hatred and discrimination, it is important that we rise above anger and despair. We must channel our emotions into positive action, into fostering a community that is truly inclusive, where every individual feels safe, valued, and respected.

We want to be a community that thrives on compassion and solidarity.

We can respond with wisdom, empathy, and a commitment to justice. Let us engage in open dialogue, educate ourselves, and others about deep-rooted prejudices that perpetuate discrimination, and understand the origin of these biases. We can dismantle them and cultivate an environment where everyone is equal.

We can address the underlying issues that lead to such acts of hatred. Education is key. Let us strive to create and support educational programs that promote tolerance, diversity, and the celebration of our shared humanity. By teaching our children the values of acceptance, understanding, and respect, we can shape a future generation that is free from prejudice.

In the face of adversity, it is often said that a community is defined by how it responds. We can redefine our community in the most powerful way possible—by coming together in solidarity. Through many Facebook postings and conversations around town, we are reaching out to one another with open hearts and open minds. By doing so, we are creating a community that is a shining example of unity and justice.

Let us honor our friend Sharif, and support him in his journey to recovery, and to reaffirm our commitment to a community that actively rejects prejudice and discrimination. Let us make it clear to the world that we are a community that stands tall, that fights for justice, and that will not be silenced by acts of hatred.

Sharif, our hearts ache for you. We send our prayers for your healing and recovery. We honour your friendship, talents, generous spirit and kindly manners. You are an inspiration to all who know you.

Know that you are not alone. Our community surrounds you with love, support, and strength. Together, we will fight against the darkness of hatred and bigotry, replacing it with the light of unity and understanding.

Love is a powerful force that transcends all boundaries. It can heal wounds, mend broken spirits, and restore hope. You have always given your love freely to all you know, and we now send our collective love to speed your recovery.

As you lie in the hospital, know that our thoughts and prayers are with you every step of the way. We will work tirelessly to create a community where diversity is celebrated, and racial prejudices are dismantled.

This Friday there will be a drumming/prayer circle at the Farmer’s Market from 2:30pm to 4pm. Those who wish to attend can bring a drum or any percussion instrument. We will be drumming, talking, and praying. Donations to go to Sharif’s family will be accepted at that time.
We are drumming for Community and Solidarity.
We are drumming for Justice.
We are drumming for Healing.
We are drumming for Sharif.

Thank you,
David Mossy
