Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MPP Bill Walker said in a news release Tuesday that he will meet with the newly appointed Minister of Health, Eric Hoskins, to discuss the future of the Markdale Hospital.

The offer to meet was made by Minister Hoskins after he failed to assure the local MPP of his government's intended date for the construction of the new hospital in Markdale, Walker said.

oppb-graphic-regularMARKDALE – On Sunday, July 6, 2014 at approximately 6:52 p.m., Grey County Ontario Provincial Police received a report of a sexual assault that occurred outside the laundry mat located at 17 Toronto St., S., Markdale, in the municipality of Grey Highlands. The victim was a 49-year old woman from Grey Highlands.

While en route to the scene, an officer observed a man, matching the description of the suspect, walking southbound on Toronto St. S. The suspect, who appeared to be intoxicated, refused to stop and talk to police despite several requests by the officer. Once he was arrested the suspect resisted arrest until such time as other officers arrived to assist. The arresting officer suffered a minor injury to his hand.

durhamdam-safe-regularWater samples taken at Durham Dam on July 3, 2014 showed bacterial levels below the provincial limit. Based on these results, the posting from June 30 has been lifted and the area is now deemed safe for bathing. The area was posted when water samples exceeded Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care standards for acceptable bacterial levels.

"Bacterial levels do fluctuate quite a lot, particularly with stormy weather." said Andrew Barton, Program Manager with the Grey Bruce Health Unit. "The best way to reduce your risk is to keep an eye on the conditions at the time of your visit. The Grey Bruce Health Unit recommends that you do not swim following heavy rain, if there are large numbers of waterfowl or other animals in the area or in cloudy water. A good rule of thumb is that you should be able to see your feet when you are waist deep."

police-os-regularSometime between 9:30 PM on Thursday July 3rd and 6:30 AM Friday July 4th, a 2001 GMC Sierra pickup truck was stolen from the west side.

The truck had been parked in the 300 block of 22nd Street West. A spare set of keys had been left in the vehicle. The owner discovered the truck missing in the morning and reported it to police.

At approximately 10:40 am the truck was found burning in the extension of the 2100 block of 6th Avenue East. The Owen Sound Fire Department attended and extinguished the fire, which had obviously been deliberately set.

rotary-regularCentre Grey Health Services Foundation has announced its support for The Hospital Campaign, an $11.4-M collaborative fundraising initiative to expand and upgrade cancer-care and cardiac programs across Grey and Bruce.

The five foundations that support Grey Bruce Health Services (Bruce Peninsula, Centre Grey, Meaford, Owen Sound, and Southampton) have joined forces in this campaign.

Money raised through Centre Grey's local chapter of the campaign will be shared between oncology/cardiac enhancements in the Owen Sound Hospital and improvements to the Centre Grey Hospital in Markdale. The latter includes operating room equipment upgrades, a new cardiology management system, and the creation of an opportunity fund to meet emerging needs at our local hospital.
