Twenty-five years ago a visionary woman left a bequest to buy a concert grand piano for the musical community of Owen Sound. On Saturday, March 21 at 8:00 p.m. that piano will be re-dedicated at a concert by Angela Park, a classical pianist of international repute.

Ms. Park will perform at the Harmony Centre, at 4th Avenue East and 9th Street. The community-owned teaching and concert space for many of Owen Sound's aspiring and professional musicians is now the permanent home for the grand piano, in the care of the Georgian Bay Symphony.

Formerly Knox United Church, the building has a rich musical heritage. In the 1930s and 40s, Mr. Cyril Moss was the organist. He often held public concerts at the church, encouraging its use for social and entertainment purposes to create and strengthen a sense of community. This tradition lives on in the Harmony Centre in meal programs, charitable events, craft shows and lectures as well as musical training and concerts.

Ms. Agnes Brown, a well-known Owen Sounder and herself an international pianist, wanted her money to purchase a high quality concert grand piano for the community not only to draw musicians worldwide, but to give local students the feel of performing on such a magnificent instrument before setting off on their careers in music, according to concert organizer David Moss-Cornett. Piano teacher and recitalist Earle Roderick Moss performed on it. Kati Gleiser grew up with it. And, “Mossy” promises, “Angela Park will bring it to life again this Saturday night!”

In the spirit of the heritage of both the building and the piano, Ms. Park will be offering a Public Master Class the following day at 1:00 p.m. which is open to anyone who wants to listen, participate and learn.

She will also offer private lessons Monday afternoon. For details on these classes, please contact David Moss-Cornett at 519-270-7082.
