Holland Marsh over Bradford

To politicians, planners, and business owners of the Holland Marsh,

Re: More onions added to the recall list

The recent safety recall of onions imported from Mexico sends up a red flag to those of us who thought we were consuming local produce.

Apparently, the prospect of real estate development in the Greenbelt has superseded the importance of preserving some of the most valuable productive agricultural lands in Canada. Ever since the Greenbelt zone was established, development has plowed ahead unabated. It seems the Greenbelt is nothing more than a means to fetch a higher price.

We are encouraged to buy local, reduce our carbon footprint, and preserve our precious arable lands. Now we learn our produce appears to be "an Ontario product, but the address on the label may only be the importer." We have not only been duped into believing we're buying vegetables grown in the Holland Marsh, but the Greenbelt is shrinking before our very eyes. Perhaps this was always the plan, but at some point, we're going to wish we could grow our own vegetables.
