In response to community concerns and increased issues along highway 6 on the Bruce Peninsula, the Bruce Peninsula Safe Communities Committee is holding a public meeting to bring stakeholders together to begin to brainstorm ideas on how to address the various issues. The Highway 6 Safety Discussion will be held October 25th from 7 pm to 9 pm at the Wiarton Arena.
Presentations from local organizations will be followed by a question and answer session from the public. It is anticipated that this meeting is the first of many and the meetings will rotate between the north and south of the Peninsula.
In the spring of 2014, volunteer members who reside in the Town of South Bruce Peninsula came together under the umbrella of Parachute Canada. The goal was to earn the Town of South Bruce Peninsula the designation of being a "Safe Community." In the fall of 2016 the committee expanded with members from Northern Bruce Peninsula; hence changing the name from the South Bruce Peninsula Safe Communities Committee to the Bruce Peninsula Safe Communities Committee (BPSCC).
Parachute Canada aims toward preventing serious injuries from children to seniors through education and programs. "Preventable injuries kill more Canadian children than any other single disease, and more youth than all other cause combined. Each year in Canada, preventable injuries cause: 16, 000 deaths, 60, 000 disabilities, 3.5 million emergency room visits, $27 billion economic burden to the Canadian economy and worst of all, 1 child dies every 9 hours, " statistics from Parachute Canada.
The BPSCC has completed several initiatives throughout the Bruce Peninsula such as; Love the Way You Drive Campaigns-focused on promoting safe driving among our youth, and bicycle safety within all the schools-with assistance from the Community Policing Committee. Current projects include water safety education and AED stations at Sauble Beach. The BPSCC is also sponsoring low cost babysitting courses. The Bruce Peninsula Safe Communities Committee is a community project and always open to new members who want to make a change. Meetings are held at the Bruce Peninsula OPP detachment in Wiarton, on the first Thursday of each month, except July and August. The meetings start at 3:30 p.m.
