budget

Premier Doug Ford's government tabled the Ontario 2023 budget yesterday. You've probably come across a few headlines about it and possibly heard the talking points that accompanied the budget.

But you haven't yet heard about its intergenerational implications.  Check out our seven intergenerational takeaways about the Ontario budget.

Here are some highlights:

  • Despite the ongoing crisis of housing unaffordability, the budget for Municipal Affairs and Housing will drop from $3.7 billion in 2020 to $1.45 billion in 2023.
  • The phrase "climate change" appears only once in the 186-page budget document.
  • Medical care spending wins out, while the social determinants of health (which require improvements in the conditions in which we live, learn, grow, and work) are sidelined.

Medical care spending is the elephant in the room in Ontario's 2023 budget.

In other words, there's plenty of work yet to be done to ensure that an intergenerational lens makes its way into Ontario's budgeting process. We'll keep at it!

Look forward to our analysis of the federal budget next week.
