The big news came with the publication on social media of the 2022 Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular poster. The giant annual fishing derby, now in its 34th year, is a "GO" for 2022.

This derby and the associated Salmon Spectaular festival are considered the largest event of the year in Grey-Bruce.

Two years ago the Covid Pandemic shuttered the event. In 2021 there was a pared down derby with a smaller tent, only weigh in facilities, limited food and beverage availability, and no afternoon or evening entertainment.

This year the entertainment is back. In years past the Salmon Spectacular has attracted as many as 50 thousand attendees to the big tent on the Owen Sound waterfront. In normal years 45-hundred anglers from far and wide compete for a wide range of prizes including fishing boats, canoes and fishing equipment valued at 150-thousand dollars.

Profits from this giant derby and festival support fish stocking and other conservation initiatives by the Owen Sound based Sydenham Sportsmen's Association.

I stopped by the west side launch ramp this week in Owen Sound and there was the sign welcoming anglers to the big derby. This area will again be buzzing with activitiy as the Salmon Spectacular ramps up in full swing on August 26th.
