This morning while walking up the old lane, I felt warmth in the sun that touched my face. I felt it right through my light jacket to my shoulders. It was as soul-enriching as the hug I received from my two-year old grandson last week in Hong Kong. This kind of feeling goes deep inside me, where words are empty and where I want to open my chest of memories and lock it away, So I write them down. Even when I cannot describe the joy, the sheer happiness of that daffodil shoving its deep yellow richness through the dead fall grass, the pencil finds a way. Not always, but often the path to my self expression lies at the end of my Bic pencil.

Between the two-hour in camera meeting and the regularly scheduled main event, city councillors mingled with a few of the almost two hundred city volunteers who had gathered outside the council chamber for the annual appreciation event.
The regular meeting began with a moment of silent reflection, but likely for the last time. The city has received legal advice on the recent Supreme Court decision about prayer before municipal meetings and have decided to err on the side of caution and remove even silence from their agenda. As this represents a change in a procedural by-law, it requires a public meeting (May 11) and a new by-law (May 25).
The National Day of Mourning for Workers Killed or Injured on the Job is April 28, and will be recognized throughout Grey and Bruce. Representatives from the Labour Council and Public Health brought sobering details of the personal and economic impact of workplace injuries.
More details of quarterly First Friday events in downtown Owen Sound were brought to council, beginning with Fresh Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. May 2. The evenings are intended to enhance the customer experience in our downtown businesses with music, food, specials and other enticements.
Council approved Francesca Dobbyn's appointment to the DIA board until 2019 because maybe she was looking for something to do with all her leisure time. Or wants to represent the folks who live above the stores.
The CP Rail station on the east side of the harbour is going to get some more attention in preparation for a long-term lessee. Some work will be city infrastructure – sewers and such – and some will be parking lot, landscaping and patio (makes you curious about the lessee, doesn't it?) the cost of which will be recovered over the term of the lease. The City's intention in buying the heritage train station from CP was always to find a tenant who would be a catalyst for further waterfront development.

Although Joni Mitchell is now a Canadian musical legend, she didn't record an album of her own until other artists had recorded and popularized her songs. On Saturday May 9th, the Georgian Bay Folk Society will continue that tradition with a tribute to Joni Mitchell at the Harmony Centre in Owen Sound featuring seven local acts performing their favourite Joni songs.
The Folk Society planned this Saturday's concert following the success of last year's tribute to Neil Young. In deciding which influential Canadian musician to honour next, Joni Mitchell's name quickly rose to the top of the list.

"Twenty of the most outstanding young jazz players in Canada". That's the way the Conn-Selmer Centrestage Jazz Band is described. So imagine how 15 year old Kaelin Murphy must have felt when he heard he had been invited to join the band at MusicFest Canada this May.
Kaelin auditioned for the invitation-only band back in March, and is looking forward to playing with other talented young musicians. He is particularly excited that the band leader is Alex Dean, Dean of Music at Humber College and an accomplished sax player, and he hopes to speak with a guest artist who played with Maynard Ferguson – Kaelin's favourite trumpet player.
The Conn-Selmer Band is named for the musical instrument manufacturer. Kaelin's own magnificently hand-engraved silver trumpet was made by the firm 91 years ago. It came from Michael Ray, a member of the Sun Ra Arkestra and of Kool and the Gang. But there is also a slight chance, enough to give the trumpet some special magic, that it might have been played by Maynard Ferguson when he was a kid.
