why: Joni Mitchell is an internationally recognized cultural force – musician, singer, composer and lyricist. She has written some of the most compelling songs of the 20th Century and inspired artists from Herbie Hancock to Prince to Madonna to Katy Perry to Diana Krall – the list is phenomenal. Joni Night In Canada celebrates her unique voice by bringing together some of Owen Sound and area's finest singer-songwriters to perform their favourite Joni tunes. Performers include host david sereda, Keira McArthur, Tyler Wagler, Tara and Trevor MacKenzie, Louise Jarvis, Missy Bauman, Larry Jensen and Owen Sound's newest poet laureate, Lauren Best. Plus, it's her birthday – come and "put on a harmony."

Mitchell's career took off when other singers discovered and recorded her innovative work, including Buffy Sainte Marie, Judy Collins and Tom Rush. Last month a new biography of Mitchell, Reckless Daughter: A Portrait of Joni Mitchell was launched, showing that her work still continues to resonate and inspire. She has won countless awards and honours, including the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, nine Grammys, Companion of the Order of Canada and the Polar Music Prize. So take a Big Yellow Taxi to Heartwood Hall – or a painted pony – as we explore the amazing musical gifts that Joni Mitchell has given us.

Joni Night in Canada is a Stray Dog Salon – a thematic, mongrel mix of music, poetry and sometimes theatre.
