Local non-violence advocate, arts promoter, and facilitator Jon Farmer has registered as a candidate for Owen Sound City Council. The 31 year old father filed his papers on June 27 to appear on the ballot for the municipal election on October 24.

“I’m running for City Council because I love Owen Sound and because I want to be part of the team working on solutions to the complex challenges facing our community,” Farmer said in a release.

“City Council has an important role to play in supporting the community. It can’t solve every problem on its own but councilors have a responsibility to research the best solutions, consider the impacts on the most vulnerable, and find creative approaches that make the most of our resources. Fiscal responsibility is essential but doesn’t have to come at the expense of our social or environmental responsibilities. I want to be a voice on council that speaks to all of those priorities and work to better include the perspectives and expertise of the community at large”.

Farmer was born and raised in Owen Sound and returned to the area in 2015 after moving to British Columbia for university. He is currently the supervisor of the Men’s Program and served as the coordinator of Violence Prevention Grey Bruce from 2017-2021. He has worked as an arts promoter with Summerfolk and Sheatre, as a community educator with the Canadian Mental Health Association and My Life Online, and as an independent writer and facilitator. He has also volunteered extensively with Summerfolk, the Owen Sound Roselawn Bowling Club, and as a facilitator and host for local events ranging from Ride Don’t Hide and Earth Day to the first ever Grey Bruce Limerick Festival.
