The West Grey Library has programs to stimulate and refresh this month.

As a nod to Valentine’s Day, the Library is using February 14th to launch a Couples & Doubles Library Hunt aimed at adults. Perfect for a (free!) date night or buddy outing, the Hunt is comprised of five challenges. If the team completes at least three, they can return their Hunt form to any branch for a dip in the Treasure Chest for Grown-ups for a little treat. The Hunt is refreshed every three months, so teams can return again and again!

For those who prefer their book clubs in natural light, the West Grey Library is offering a new Daytime Book Club, starting Thursday, February 16th at 2:30 at the Durham Branch. The first book to be discussed is The Mapmaker’s Children by Sarah McCoy, in which two women’s lives, 150 years apart, interconnect. One, Sarah Brown, is an historical figure; daughter of abolitionist John Brown, she realizes that her artistic talents may be of use as one of the Underground Railroad’s leading mapmakers.

A special event on Friday, March 3rd at the Durham Town Hall, 185 George St W, will feature two Guelph-area writers who have written in at least two genres each. This casual evening will explore what’s involved in leading a writing life, and how it works to move from one genre to another. Each author will read a selection from her work.

Barbara Kyle, whose previous career was in theatre, and who teaches writing in addition to continuing her own flourishing writing career, gained recognition for her bestselling Thornleigh Saga, historical novels and acclaimed thrillers with over half a million copies of her books sold. Her latest novel, Deadly Trade, features an animal rights activist and is due out in September of 2023.

Carole Kennedy is an Edgar-nominated author who writes under her Irish name, C.S. O’Cinneide. Her debut novel, Petra’s Ghost, a dark thriller set on the Camino de Santiago, was a semi-finalist in the Goodreads Choice Awards 2019. She is also the author of a tongue-in-cheek noir crime series featuring hard-living hitwoman, Candace Starr. Her most recent novel, Eve’s Rib, is a mother-daughter thriller that blends domestic suspense with witchcraft.

Tickets are $15, available through Eventbrite and at the door (cash or cheque).
