Heavy rainfall on August 7, 2021 resulted in elevated water levels and fast flowing rivers, caused flooding in downtown Durham and at least two serious road washouts.

The Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority (SVCA) reported the localized storm cell over Durham measured 65 mm of rain causing the excessive runoff and roadway flooding. Several basements were flooded and roads were closed over the course of the early evening weather event.

“West Grey police, fire and public works staff responded quickly to ensure public safety and to protect our municipal infrastructure,” said Mayor Christine Robinson. “Ongoing assessments will be completed over the next few days as West Grey staff and conservation authority officials continue monitoring the situation.”

The Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority (SVCA) issued a Water Safety Statement that is in effect until 10 a.m. August 10, 2021. SVCA advises that more rain and thunderstorms could further increase water levels and flow speeds.

“West Grey is blessed with many rivers and streams, and at times like this, it’s important to remind citizens to take extra precaution around fast-moving water,” said Mayor Robinson. “Be especially vigilant, and remember to keep children and pets away from river banks and streams.”
