attack-tickets-featureThe Owen Sound Attack are back in action this week with three games which get underway with a Wednesday night match up with the Guelph Storm. A 7:00pm puck drop at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre, the Attack and Storm will meet for the 3rd time already in this young season.

The Attack enter Wednesday's contest on the heels of a thrilling overtime victory over the Windsor Spitfires on Sunday, Oct. 18, a game that pushed Owen Sound to a record of 5-3-1-1, good for 12 points and 4th a current spot of 4th place in the Midwest Division. Guelph sits directly behind the Attack in the Midwest, with a record of 1-7-1-0 on the year which has given them three points.

The squads have split the two previous meetings, with Owen Sound winning the first match up 1-0 in overtime, while the Storm

The City of Owen Sound will host the final Fall/Winter minor sports registration on Wednesday, September 23rd from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre in the Bay Room.
Groups participating include: Owen Sound Skating Club, Minor Basketball, Futsal Satellites Gymnastic Club, Owen Sound Aquatic Club, Girl Guides, Junior Curling, Ringette and Fudoshin Classical Karate.
NEW - Meaford residents will no longer wait for a refund of the non-resident user fee. Meaford residents will pay only 10% of the applicable non-resident fee ($167/per child/sport for ice sport).

G-V-Hitmen-featThe Grand Valley Midget Hitmen Fastball team won gold this past weekend at the U18 Boys Western Canadian Fastpitch Championships in Lloydminster AB.

Three members of the Grand Valley team who are local to Owen Sound are Jordan Baumber (red jersey) from Owen sound played 1B and batted .476 in the tournament.  Connor Long (#4) from Meaford played 2B and batted .526 with a HR.  Matt Chegahno (red bat) from Wiarton played LF and batted .411 with a HR. 

The tournament saw Grand Valley going 4-1 in the Round Robin with wins against the Conquest SK Coyotes (15-2) , Cross Lake MB Pirates (3-1), Cloverdale BC Rockies ...

rugby-featureThis article was first published in my Orange Crate column in the Sun Times when Owen Sounder Jason Crone was on his way to the 2012 Paralympics in London. The local wheelchair rugby player and the Canadian team won silver at those games, and Crone subsequently retired from the national team, but he has returned to compete for Canada in the Toronto ParaPanam games. Semi-finals and finals will be August 13 and 14.

 

Jason Crone was a fifteen year old defenceman when his neck was broken in a minor hockey game in 2003. Before he was even allowed to sit up in rehab, he was introduced to the sport of wheelchair rugby, and some of its champions were introduced to him. By the fall of 2005 he was playing, but the family's deal was that he had to finish high school. Deal done, he was training with the national practice team and set himself the goal of playing for Canada at the Beijing Paralympics. In a 2010 interview Jason said "Having the CANADA across my chest is one of the biggest honours I can imagine...just a great feeling". The bronze medal around his neck must have felt pretty good too.

The Owen Sound Attack is pleased to announce that they have named Ryan McGill as their new Head Coach and Derek King as his Assistant Coach.

McGill, 46 was most recently the Head Coach of the Kootenay Ice of the Western Hockey League, his second stint with the team.

In his first stint as Head Coach of the Ice from 1997-2002 where he won two Western Hockey League Championships in 2000 and 2002, including a Memorial Cup with the Ice in 2002. Following his successful stay in Kootenay, Ryan served as the Head Coach of Quad City, Omaha and Hartford in the American League before spending two years as an Assistant Coach with the Calgary Flames in the NHL. McGill returned to Kootenay in 2012 as their Head Coach and was also the Assistant Coach of Team Canada's 2014 World Junior Under 20 Team. Ryan and his family currently reside in British Columbia.
